Bone health, exercise and vitamin D
Listen up parents—orthopaedic doctors are seeing the return of rickets. Rickets is a softening or weakening of bones in children caused by extreme deficiency of vitamin D. Rickets is a disease that was primarily seen in the late 1800s, and while it isn’t rampant right now by any means, it’s unsettling to see the condition at all because we know the cause and how to treat it. Rickets was more or less eradicated in the U.S. and U.K. by the 1940s.

If it’s a spring or fall Saturday morning, you’ll find me coaching my 11-year-old son’s soccer team in Portsmouth, Va. Not only is it a great opportunity for me to spend time with my own children, but I love teaching young athletes how to tap into their athletic potential while also learning how to listen to their body.

Jingle in July
Lots of people are thinking about bathing suits and poolside parties – it’s summer, after all! But at the Arthritis Foundation and SMOC, we’re thinking about the Jingle Bell Run/Walk, a fun holiday, family friendly event that features a 5k and a 1k fun run for kids! Held on Saturday, December 2nd, the Jingle Bell Run/Walk also includes costume contests and plenty of festivities – all to raise funds for arthritis research, advocacy efforts and resources.

Dr. Nicolai Baecher is brand new to our practice this month, and specializes in hand, elbow, and shoulder surgery. Dr. Baecher chose to specialize in hand surgery for its complexity. With 29 bones and 34 muscles at work to move your fingers and thumb, you can imagine there’s a lot of variety and intricacy in the kind of surgeries Dr. Baecher performs.
