SMOC’s Chesapeake, VA facility takes home top commercial real estate and interior design awards
Chesapeake, Virginia November 28, 2018 — Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center (SMOC), a leading orthopaedic independently owned physician medical group in Hampton Roads, received accolades from the Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate (HRACRE) and the Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).
SMOC’s new facility, designed by PF&A Design was completed in October 2016 and boasts 27,000 square feet of modern design that highlights technology and creates a patient-centered experience. The HRACRE awarded the facility the “Best Healthcare Building Award”. Entries were judged on context and design challenges, innovative design solutions, special architectural and sustainable features, and impact on the community.
“The design of the architecture and interiors departs from the traditional healthcare model by incorporating a hybrid on-stage, off-stage patient staff model. The building is one story broken into several massing volumes giving it visual interest and curiosity to the activities held within. Throughout the interior, one can engage with natural daylight and views to the exterior. The utilization of colors, wayfinding graphics, and varying spatial volumes, with dynamic lighting patterns create spaces of interest and visual joy. These elements create a cohesive tapestry that speaks to the energy, patient and staff flows, and strengthening exercises of physical therapy, pain management, orthopaedic, and spine programs.” Sharon Szalai, PF&A
Additionally, PF&A Design received the 1st place Interior Design Excellence Award from ASID in the over 15,000 square foot category. Entries were judged on success and creative response in meeting client’s needs and objectives, as well as scale, proportion, color composition, effective use of lighting, and relationship of materials, textures, and patterns.

SMOC, PF&A Design, and Allfirst Industrial General Contractors set out to build a facility showcasing technology while offering an experience for patients that would break the norm by fusing contemporary art with medical art and technology with transparency.
