“It all starts with good mechanics,” said Dr. Romash. Originally enrolled as an engineering student at the United States Military Academy at West Point, he recognized early on how the mechanics of the body could benefit a lot of people.

After college, Dr. Romash served as a Field Artillery Officer in Germany, returning stateside to earn his medical degree at Temple University School of Medicine. He went on to become a Colonel as well as Chief of Joint Replacement and Foot and Ankle Services at Tripler Army Medical Center, Hawaii.

In 1988, Dr. Romash left the military to join the dynamic practice that is now SMOC. A lower extremity specialist, he is a Fellow of the prestigious American Orthopaedic Association and known as a pioneer in his field. Author of numerous medical journal articles and chapters in text books about foot and ankle surgery, he has developed treatments commonly used for various heel fractures.

His method of treatment of calcaneal fractures was conceived during his tour as an orthopaedic surgeon with the 82nd Airborne Division, where such heel fractures used to end a paratrooper’s career. This led to development of his innovative metal plate which is now widely used.

Dr. Michael Romash is a familiar face on the sidelines of local high school soccer games, and he is licensed to teach other soccer coaches in the state of Virginia.
